Friends, Colleagues, and Supporters:

In the fall of 2002, five young adults, with a vision for positive community development, opened up the doors of The Crib Collective to help bring innovative ideas through cultural unity and youth leadership for community change to life. Since then, The Crib Collective has provided a supportive, developmental space for young leaders in the North Lawndale and Little Village communities. Programs such as “Generation Innovation” have allowed youth to lead over 45 successful community projects with $45,000 in small grants over the past five years. Michael Willis, a 17 year old Crib Collective grant awardee, founded the Chicago Chargers youth football leadership program. He designed the program with the aspiration of providing youth with activities to ignite social, disciplinary, and leadership skills through enjoyable and safe behavior. With the assistance of The Crib Collective, Willis was inspired to apply and successfully receive tax-exempt non-profit status for his program. This year we will be nurturing an additional nine youth-led projects and to ensure the successful launch of these projects we will need your help.

As we near the close of our fiscal year, we look forward to celebrating all of the great work done by our youth and staff. However, due to the challenges presented by our current economic climate, we have fallen short of our fundraising goals, leaving us with a sizeable, yet attainable, gap to fill. In order to guarantee that we meet our budget, allowing us to continue offering small grants and training to local youth, we need to raise an additional $10,000 by June 30, 2009.

To reach this goal, we are asking our friends and supporters to participate by raising $100 on our behalf. It may sound like a large amount, but we are trying to make this as painless as possible. We are asking that you use the attached pledge form to raise $10 from each of your ten most generous family, friends or colleagues. With that approach, you’ll be able to raise $100 in no time. We would love to hear that you’ve surpassed your $100 benchmark, so don’t be shy. If we can get 100 of our supporters to do the same, we’ll reach our $10,000 goal by the end of June.

These small gifts from you and your friends will allow us to offer grants for nine creative community projects like those described on the attached pledge form. These dollars will also help us meet our operating costs, such as payroll for our dedicated staff and rent for our space. With your support, we will succeed. If you have friends that are interested in helping us raise money, please send them a pledge form and encourage them to tap their networks on our behalf. As a token of our appreciation, we are offering admission to our 4th Annual Grantee Reception and Fundraiser on June 19th, 2009, where your support will be acknowledged by our Youth Grant-making Team along with copies of our “Best of The Crib” and “Get Yours” open mic CDs. These are small gifts to show our appreciation for your stewardship, but we hope the success of our work is just as motivating.
